This is a truly beautiful picture! How long will summer last? When will it start getting cold? I'll bet it depends, isn't it a fairly large country? Gad, my geography is so poor!

summer lasts the normal time that summer lasts. 3 months... just in the last week its started to cool down a bit. we've had a few days in a row of 20 degrees (celsius) but last week it was 33 degrees.

some parts of mongolia stay cool all year round (near lakes and in the mountains) and some parts like the Gobi desert much warmer in summer time than UB. but then gobi can get colder in the winter.

mongolia is a 'fairly large' country. but its sandwiched between two giants (russia and china) so it looks kinda small sometimes. its about 1.5 million square kilometres. thats over twice the size of texas. its only got about 2.5-3 million people and 1 million of them live in ulaanbaatar. so the population density is astoundingly low when you compare it to china, for example. mongolians like it that way and so do i!

it starts getting cold in october. thats when it will start reaching 0 degrees. by december it will get to minus 40 degrees. bbrrrr! (however, at that time i will be sweltering in the tropical humid heat of northern Australia!)

Great pictures and story, as ususal!
How about some technical info on the photo's...What kind of digital (I assume) camera...
What pixel dimensions do you set the camera for...Who hosts your photo's for inclusion in your posts...Are you using a laptop..probably...?
Thanks!

okay, technical information... hmmm.. i use a canon s2 1s digital camera. its my first digital camera and i got it on the way to mongolia. (it took a while for me to come around to the benefits of digital photography, and still i can't wait to get my hands on my film SLR back home!) its a 5 MP camera, but i use the setting that is probably equivalent to the highest qual on a 3MP camera. i still don't know how to use all the functions and menu so i can't look it up exactly. i have a 1GB memory card, so i can fit a lot on it. to be honest i don't know that much about digital photography.
the s21s main benefit for my photography is that it is a 12x optical zoom. usual dig cam has 3x. thats why i chose it. it has some other handy features, but it also has a major flaw which is that it takes a noticeably long time for the camera to take a photo once you've pressed the button, and i've missed some great photos as a result.

i put my photos on my blog using 'hello' - i like the way it lays them out, as opposed to if you just cut and paste them in a blog. BUT the prob is that you can only put in one per post, if you use 'hello'. my blog is hosted by 'blogger' which is pretty good. i wish i knew how to change my template around, but i don't know which parts of the template instructions to change (its in that computer language which i don't really understand).

yes i use a laptop. I have a great little laptop which is small and light. its a dell inspiron 700m - fairly average run of the mill features. i also got it just before i came to mongolia, and its been a very handy addition. i have brought all my music collection from home on it, and am building up a huge library of photos, plus i use it for work - oh and good to keep in touch with my family and friends and to be able to write stuff. i have dial-up internet access from home, which is pretty handy - but slow (max 46.6 kbps), sometimes very time consuming to post photos. mongolia is embracing the internet with great gusto. lucky for me.
is that too much information or not enough?
thanks for your questions moparman!

Julia...Thanks for the response to my questions...you gave me just what I wanted to know!
I also have a Canon digital, but it's older and not as sophisticated as yours. I wish I had a 12X zoom, as mine is only 3X as you said most are.
Your site is very well structured and the photos are well integrated...you needn't change anything in my opinion.
I wish you continued success and happiness in your adventure there!
