For centuries, Mongols have staged festivals to display warrior skills including wrestling, horseracing and archery - the three manly sports. In recent times this has evolved into the annual Naadam festival. This is one of two major national celebrations in Mongolia, accompanied by a generous national holiday period for a week. This year it was held from July 11-13 in Ulaan Baatar. The 2006 celebration enjoyed an extra effort to highlight the 800th anniversary of Chinggis Khans reign. It was a spectacle of vivid colour, national pride, enhanced with the smell of dust and deep fried hurshuur (patries filled with mutton mince). Here are some photos from my experiences.
