Delightful Terelj
I went out to Terelj National Park last weekend (which is about 90 minutes away from UB). It was so stunning. We stayed in a ger owned by a family that included this little tacker who spent most of his time running around with his pants falling down or completely off! we went on a magnificent horse ride through shallow crystal clear rivers lined with large smooth stones and through valleys with the most incredibly dazzling array of wildflowers i have ever seen... magenta, violet, deep blood scarlet, luminous yellow, pale cream, vivid orange... i didn't know such sights existed outside of fairy tales. sigh! Mongolia never ceases to amaze me. (PS you will have to be satisifed with a literary painting of the horse ride sights, i was too nervous on the horse to take my camera!)

Hi Julia:
What a beautiful little boy! It is hard to imagine Mongolia being so colorful. We think of it as being desolate, dry, and brown. Thanks for the literary images. Is it hot there? What is a summer in Mongolia like?
Mongolia is very colourful especially in the summertime. It is overwhelmingly green in most of the country - its like someone rolled out a giant verdant grass carpet. it is astounding - i'd say it looks like a giant golf course (because there are no trees) but I don't like golf courses so i won't make that comparison, but the green colour is very similar, vibrant green. In autumn the grass turns golden and in the winter its covered in snow and in spring its an uninspiring brown but soon transforms to green.
the summer time is quite warm. most days were are over 20oC and have even had a few days over 30oC! Its rained alot this summer which some people have told me is not normal. lovely storms with brooding grey clouds and rumblings of thunder. big heavy warm drops. reminds me a little of the tropical storms i am used to at home. i arrived here at the beginning of winter and its so incredible to see the changes. in wintertime everyone looks the same because they are all wearing big winter jackets and boots and scarves and hats, but summertime has brought out people in clothing in rainbows of colour and variety. there are so many people walking around all the time and playing and joking and smiling - very different to winter...
Wow. It sounds beautiful, and I'm looking forward to your photos as the seasons change. Are you from Australia? You're a long way from home!
Yes i'm from Australia... most places are a long way from Mongolia! I've only got one season change left and thats summer into autumn. I can't wait because Mongolian people often say that autumn is their favourite time...
